Visiting BISBEE? Would you or you and a few friends like to build a custom piece of jewelry If you have an idea for a custom small group, I'd love to hear it. My Studio and my expertise is available for individual bookings to suit your schedule. Prices vary from $425 for an individual for a 3+hours session or $$325 each for 2 people. This time allotment you could build a ring or a necklace. Big bracelet or bolo projects would take longer more materials and an additional charge And a special rate for a group. What to Bring to class:
I provide all tools and materials for your class. This workshop explores metalworking fundamentals and is perfect for those who wanted to learn traditional jewelry fabrication skills. Students will develop hand skills, good studio habits, an appreciation for quality craftsmanship, and essential fabrication techniques while designing and producing one-of-a-kind jewelry.
This class requires you to work with tiny details and demands hand dexterity. Students will learn to cut and pierce out shapes from the metal sheet using a jeweler's saw, solder with a torch, how to use a flex shaft, add texture to surfaces. All materials are included, I also have a personal stash of larger higher end cabochons available for purchase if you choose one, those are an additional charge of $25-$40 to cover extra carat weight and extra silver.
Please bring patience, openness and reading glasses if needed. No flowy sleeve blouses. Long fingernails will make it very difficult to work with your hands. Classes involve fine motor skills and the ability to work on a small scale. This will require a bit of (fun) hard work. I suggest you wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty. The Studio is a hip converted garage with heat and cooling but on extreme temprature days bring a sweater or a tank top accordingly. My studio is a well equipped space. It has a hip vibe and is located in the gulch district of Bisbee a block down from all the bars and restaurants. Each student has their own workbench, flex shaft, hand tools, etc. There is a soldering station with ventilation. There is an anvil with loads of hammers, stamps and other forming tools. I have an amazing collection of gemstones for you to choose from for your project.
I have focused on the Jewelry arts for 42 years. I feel honored to carry on a long tradition of working with my hands and heart, using ancient techniques and tools. As a metalsmith I am a stewert of this profession, and it is my responsibility to pass this knowledge and information on. I have shown my work in galleries and museums all over the nation and internationally including the Smithsonian Institute of art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and published in numerous books and magazines. I look forward to sharing my skills and tricks of the trade with you. Bolo Tie Class;
Learn the skills to build a cool one of a kind bolo tie. This is the most challenging class I am teaching. It will require about 5+ hours hard work and patience. Don't let me talk you out of the class, I just want you to realize the commitment and effort it will take to build this piece. Sterling Silver and a piece of jasper of your choice, Leather bolo cord in either brown or black will be included in your class cost. I have lots of interesting Jaspers from Oregon. Biggs, Picture, Oywee. You can also use a river rock. If you choose to use elk ivories on your tips you will have to supply your own ivories. Join me for a ring build workshop in Bisbee Arizona named the Best small desert town 2024 by Travel + Leisure magazine. You will learn all the skills needed to build an amazing stone ring and a stone necklace or slim cuff bracelet. Skills you will learn include soldering, sawing, filing, setting a cabochon and so many other techniques. No experience necessary, tenacity required. I have 41 years of jewelry building experience, let me guide you through the steps for you to competently take these skills home to apply in your own workshop. Included in the workshop cost is instruction and all materials included. Class starts at 11:00 and ends about 5:00 I have cold beverages bring a snack if you feel you may need one.
Student Work
Learn all the basics in this 3 hour class. Design a functional hip and comfortable pair of earrings, that you will take home with you.This class is the easiest of all my classes. Learn techniques using a jewelers saw, how to change a saw blade, learn how to use a bench pin, soldering, filling and finishing. You can customize your earring design to suit your style, but must be similar to the steps we are learning in this course. Make and Take Earring Class
